When the word chandelier comes to mind, we tend to think about those large and sparkly lighting fixtures installed in elegant and luxurious spaces emitting a tremendous amount of gleaming and bright light. But there is more to chandelier than just this. There is a wide range of types and various features and designs of chandeliers available in shops.

So when you go shopping chandeliers without prior research and preparation, you will be left confused and with various questions in mind. "are crystal and metal brass chandeliers still a popular style?", "what type of designer chandelier will look best in a mid-century modern room?", "what should be the width and height of the chandelier for your room?" questions like these may come up in your mind.

So it is important to do your research before going to buy a chandelier. Continue reading to understand which type and size of the chandelier is for your house and clarify other questions in your mind.

Are crystal chandeliers still in trend?

The invention of chandeliers was necessitated when there was a requirement to hold several candles in one place for large rooms like ballrooms or dining rooms. Later on, the use of crystals in the candle chandeliers showed enhancement in the candlelight, and thus this design came into being.

After the bulbs replaced the candles, the glow and sparkle of the chandelier were further magnified and more loved by people. This is why crystal chandeliers are still in the trend and used in living rooms, dining rooms as well as entry passages. The chandelier offers a dramatic ambience that light up the whole room.

Where Can You Use A Chandelier?

Chandeliers can be used anywhere if they go well with your decor. Instead of using monotonous and dull ceiling fixtures, chandeliers can be used to improve the look of the room. Being the most popular lighting trend, chandeliers can replace ordinary ceiling lights in foyers, living rooms, kitchens, as well as areas where the ceiling height is enough for a chandelier.

There are modern mini chandeliers available for smaller spaces with low ceilings that are enough to make a dramatic ambience. There are two things you need to determine when it comes to positioning the chandelier. These include the handing height of the chandelier and the place where it will be placed in your room.

Your room's aesthetic and outlook depends on the correct installation of the chandelier. If the chandelier is too high, then it will not be able to light up the entire room, and if it is too low, it will block the traffic in the area. So here is a guide to refer to when installing a chandelier.

1)       Dining Room

The best place to mount a chandelier in the dining room is not the centre of the room but instead the centre of the dining table. This is because the dining table is usually not directed at the centre of the room with the addition of a side table or buffet table. So if your chandelier is positioned at the centre of the room, then it will create an imbalance and a confusing movement of the eye. With respect to hanging height, it should be 30 to 36inches above your dining table.

2)       Kitchen

The best place to mount a chandelier in the kitchen is at the centre of the kitchen island. The chandelier should be 30 to 36inches above the island surface. In case you plan to install multiple mini modern chandeliers or pendant lights, then it's best to place them 30inches apart from each other over the kitchen island to create the perfect balance and harmony.

So if there are three pendant lights, then install one in the middle of the island and then the other two 30 inches apart from the middle one on both sides.

3)       Living Room, bedroom, hallways or foyer

Chandeliers look best in the middle of the living room or bedroom or directly above the coffee table or your bed. If you are going for mini chandeliers, then they will look best 30 to 36 inches above the nightstand.

In a small foyer, you can place the chandelier in the middle of the area, but in large foyers, a chandelier placed above the round table will offer better aesthetics. It is important to remember to mount the chandelier so that there is a space of 7 feet between the bottom of the chandelier and the room's floor. This will ensure that the chandelier does not obstruct traffic or bump into people's heads.

4)       Bathroom

Ideally, a chandelier is not recommended for a bathroom due to safety issues. But if you want to install one, then it should be at least 3 feet from the shower or tub and at least 8 feet above the highest area of the tub.

What type of chandeliers is for the outdoors?

Installing a chandelier outdoors requires precautions since patios, porches, and verandas may have moisture present. This is why it's essential to choose a chandelier specifically made for the outdoors. When it comes to outdoor chandeliers, there are two types of fixtures, including those for wet locations and those for damp locations.

1) Wet rated chandeliers

These are installed in areas where there is a direct chance of water. These are best for pergolas or gazebos.

2) Damp rated chandeliers

These fixtures are installed where there is some shade that protects them from direct exposure to water. These are best for covered patio decks or porches.

What are the various types of chandelier finishes?

Chandeliers exhibit bright light that adds to the grandeur of the area it's installed in.  Due to this, chandeliers are installed in top notch hotels, luxurious restaurants, offices and homes.

Due to its wide scale use in various buildings, this lighting fixture is available in various types that offer different features and designs. Chandeliers produced nowadays are powered with electricity and thus contain light bulbs. However, you can also find antique ones that use candles or gas lights.

1) Crystal chandeliers

These chandeliers are well known and the most popular chandeliers among people. The crystal shrubs and bushes used in the chandelier are crafted from glass cut pieces, which are arranged together. Since crystals reflect light easily, producing a good and gleaming effect, they tend to be eye-catching and aesthetically appealing.

There is a wide range of varieties of crystal chandeliers that you can find in the market. These chandeliers have been made since the 1780s, maintaining their quality up till now. If you are looking for a classic, elegant and traditional light fixture, then a crystal chandelier is the one you need.

2) Contemporary chandeliers

Variations in the chandeliers have brought about more minimalist designed modern chandeliers that have a similarly elegant and luxurious effect as the traditional chandeliers.

Elegant lines and curves are the most profound feature in modern chandeliers. This is sought after by the newer generations because not only does the contemporary chandelier produce a luxurious and bright ambience, it also gives light according to their requirements.

3) Pearl shell chandeliers

This type of lighting fixture is one of the most popular contemporary chandeliers in the market. They consist of a modern design of pearls and shells. A cover is used as a lid for candlesticks, which is known as pearl shells. This allows for the chandelier to give out softer light and thus works best in sophisticated places like fine food restaurants.

This type of chandelier is quite similar to the crystal chandelier, but instead of using crystals, pearls are used that are much lighter and thus easy to hang. So the pearl shell chandelier is much cheaper as compared to the crystal chandelier. But despite that, it offers a similar effect.

4) Metal chandeliers

This type of chandelier can be simple or elaborate lighting fixtures. The surface treatments for metal chandeliers include iron, nickel and brass. Since iron and other metals are cheaper, this allows people to take advantage of metal chandeliers to create a more elegant and stylish home. Classic lighting fixtures can be decorated with them and thus are best for household decoration.

5) Antler chandeliers

The antler chandelier is created from the horns of deer or mousses. They produce a rustic ambience in the room they are hung in and are mostly used in cottages, hunting huts or log cabins. If you cannot find a real spider antler chandelier, then you can go for an antler chandelier produced from plastic fibre or wood.

Antler is a newer material being used in producing luminaries. The various horns used in creating this chandelier include the horns from the mousse, white tailed deer, and mule deer.

6) Candle chandeliers

This lighting fixture made from metals such as wrought iron or brass nickel creates an elegant piece that echoes the charm of the past. Chandeliers made from metals to hold candles have been around since the 15th century. But now they are modernized to hold electric light bulbs. Antique metal chandeliers are one of the rarest and most expensive lighting fixtures in the market, making them collectible accessories.

7) Alabaster chandeliers

Alabaster stone or finely textured plaster is used for chandeliers and has a marble pattern on it. Alabaster lighting is famous because of the unique and natural qualities an alabaster stone has to offer when lighted.

Alabaster stone, when illuminated, diffuses the light evenly and subtly. This soft light makes alabaster chandeliers famous. A chandelier that has a clay tone with a touch of the square is surely an alabaster chandelier.

Once you know which type of chandelier best suits your needs and requirements, then the next thing you need to determine is the size of chandelier you want. The size of the chandelier will depend upon the size of the space you want to install it in. So continue reading to understand how to choose the right size.

How to find the right chandelier size?

In order to find the right size of the chandelier you need for your room, you will have to measure the area you want to install it in. It is crucial that you take note of the length and width of the room, ceiling height, number of bulbs needed to light the room, will the chandelier be hung in an open area, sitting area or above a table or island.

Size of chandelier

The size of the chandelier is determined by the dimensions of your room. This is irrespective of whether you want a crystal chandelier, a candle chandelier, a contemporary chandelier or a rustic chandelier.

If your lighting fixture is too small or too large with respect to the space, then there will be an imbalance and unappealing outlook of the room. So before you can choose a chandelier, you need to measure the width, length and height of the room.

Width of chandelier

To find the correct size of a chandelier, you need to measure the width and length of the room in feet. Then these two numbers need to be added together, and the answer you get will be used as the width of the chandelier in inches. For example:

If your room is 11’ by 14’, then the sum of these two is 25’, so the width of your chandelier needs to be 25 inches.

But this calculation is for open space. So if you are hanging it over a table or island, then your chandelier's width will be 12 inches less than the width of the table or island so that there is no hindrance in the traffic.

Height of chandelier

For the height of the chandelier, 3 inches is recommended for every foot of area between the ceiling and floor. So the chandelier's height can be calculated by multiplying the height of the ceiling by 3. for example:

If the height of the ceiling is 7', then the chandelier's height should be 7x3=21inches

How to adjust the height of chandelier with downrods, wires and chains

Chandeliers usually come with chains and wires that can be used to adjust the height of the chandelier. Usually, a 6 feet chain and 10 feet wire works well in many house installations and can easily be used to adjust the hanging height to fit properly in your space. Chains are in joined links that can be easily added and removed depending upon the length you are aiming for.

The wires similarly are given extra so that after adjusting the height, you can cut them before chandelier installation. It is crucial that you measure correctly before cutting because there is no going back. It's best to leave some extra wire to avoid hassles. Downrods are also included in various chandeliers. The different lengths can be used to get your desired hanging height.

The downrods do not need to be cut. Instead, they can be attached and detached from one another. This makes it easy to install chandeliers in high ceiling rooms as well as low ceiling rooms.

Usually, the downrods or chains included in the chandeliers are enough for most ceiling height, but if you need more downrods or longer chains for higher ceilings, then you should talk about it before purchasing. Moreover, you can also install a motorized chandelier that will allow you to lower and lift the lighting fixture to allow easier cleaning and bulb fixing.

The chandeliers that use chains to hang can be installed directly into the junction box. Gravity will ensure that your chandelier hangs down straight. If you want to install on a sloped ceiling, then ensure the downrods you use are adaptable to the sloped ceiling, thus allowing you various angles for the installation of the chandelier.

Moreover, with respect to ceiling support, most small to middle sized chandeliers can be easily installed into junction boxes without any additional ceiling support. But chandeliers that exceed 50 pounds in weight need additional ceiling support. The expandable chandelier is used and positioned between ceiling joists for additional support. Most chandeliers, mini chandeliers and pendants come with a ceiling plate, also known as a ceiling canopy. This canopy covers the junction box and makes the chandelier and your room more elegant.

It's important to remember that if you have second thoughts about installation, then you should consult with a licensed electrician who can help you out and save you the trouble. If you experienced a problem when installing your chandelier, then it's time for you to get help from professionals. They will assist you in ensuring that your chandelier is installed properly.

Features of chandeliers

Crystals are what make a chandelier magical. They are made out of glass which makes them transparent, delicate and fragile. In order to increase some of the properties of glass, lead is added to the glass. By increasing the density of the glass, manufacturers can increase its refractive properties by making them more shiny and clear. Let us look at acrylic and crystal chandeliers, where they are used, how they are suspended and their appearance.

Appearance

Acrylic light

Different chandeliers have different appearances and installation procedures. They have different uses and are installed in different areas, which is why you should consider these aspects before purchasing one for your home. Acrylic light has different forms, and the glass fixture is hung from the ceiling y one chain or cord.

Crystal light

Crystal light chandeliers not only increase the beauty of the room but can also be used as a decoration or a light source. In the old days, chandeliers were used by the rich and the churches to lighten up buildings and homes. However, with the advancements in technology, chandeliers were replaced by small lighting fixtures for use as a light source.

Crystal chandeliers come in many styles, including rustic, tiered, and down-light, being the ones available in the market. They come in a wide variety of sizes ranging from mini, small, medium to large chandeliers. A crystal chandelier has a branching system with canopy bulbs, a chain and a central body. When purchasing a chandelier, always consider and prefer a medium sized chandelier instead of one that attracts attention.

Suspension

Acrylic chandeliers

Every chandelier has a different suspension and installation method. The acrylic chandelier cord is made from hardwire and is at least six feet long so that the cords and chains do not dangle. If its look is more polished, the chandelier can act as the primary light source and be a permanent light fixture. Installing one brightly lit chandelier is better than multiple plug-in lamps. If you are using a plug-in light, the cord should be at least nine feet long because it's the extension cord that connects the light to the socket. The cords and chains of the chandeliers have different lengths and have to be adjusted in order to ensure a proper fit. A high ceiling needs a long cord, whereas a low ceiling needs a short one.

Crystal light

Crystal light chandeliers are tricky to install. If you have a high ceiling, the lights should be higher up, and if the room is wide, the fixture should also be wide.

The size of your room will determine where you should hang the chandelier. If the chandelier is hung very low, then it may cause hindrance to the people moving around. On the other hand, if the chandelier is hung very high up, then it will not cover a wide area. Thus light dispersion will be reduced. An acrylic chandelier requires an electrician to install them. Contact an electrician and do not do it yourself.

Materials used

In Acrylic light chandeliers

In acrylic light chandeliers, the materials most commonly used are metal, glass, cloth and plastic. The reason for using clear glass is because it allows the diffusion of light in all directions. However, some metals such as polished chrome and brass nickel have a shiny finish that is able to reflect light as well.

In crystal light chandeliers

Crystal light chandeliers are made from steel, bronze, hand-forged iron or crystal. Other combinations of materials can also be used. They usually have bulbs shaped like flames and crystal prisms.

Acrylic chandeliers are commonly used in the kitchen and living room.

Crystal light chandeliers are used nearly everywhere in the house, from the dining room to the living room. They can also be used in the bathroom, but that is not preferred because of safety concerns and issues. They can be used in bedrooms to give the bedroom a luxurious and magical look.

Hence, the acrylic chandelier is mostly seen in homes. When searching for chandeliers, you should consider why you want a chandelier and what purpose you want it to fulfil.

How many light bulbs should there be in a chandelier?

Modern design bulbs come with the greatest technology that provides immense light irrespective of their small size. Four bulb chandeliers and light fixtures are sufficient for small spaces such as closets and bedrooms. For larger rooms such as the kitchen, living room and dining room, it is very important to have bright lighting.

Before deciding on the number of bulbs, you should measure the size of the room you want to hang the chandelier in. You should also pay special attention to whether there are other spot fixtures, pendant lights and spot fixtures. A room the size of 13x13 should have at least six bulbs. The larger the room, the greater the no of bulbs there will be.

At what distance from the table should you hang a chandelier?

If you want to hang your chandelier over your kitchen table or dining table, then you should ensure that the bottom of the chandelier should be at least 33' above the surface of the table.

Measure from the ceiling and the top of the table and then subtract the number from 33' and how long your chandelier should be. If your dining room ceiling height is greater than 10 feet, then your chandelier can be up to four feet long.

How high up should your chandelier be hung?

In kitchens, hallways, and bedrooms, the chandeliers should be seven feet above the floor so that people can safely pass under them. If you want it to be a little higher up, you can ask your electrician to shorten the chain, which will allow you to hang the chandelier closer to the ceiling.

How high up should a chandelier be for a stairwell?

If the staircase is a double story, then the chandelier should be at the level of the first floor, which is approximately eleven feet above the ground. The style of the chandelier matters a lot when it comes to stairwell chandeliers.

You and your visitors will be looking down on the chandelier from above, which is why you should go for a style that is attractive from the top too. A long, narrow, decent style chandelier can really stir things up and make a statement as your visitors ascend the staircase.

Do you need a special electrical box for your chandelier?

If you have the latest house with updated wiring, your electrical junction box should be able to support your chandelier. The latest electrical boxes can support up to fifty pounds. A junction box that is designed to hold a ceiling fan can support a chandelier of up to seventy pounds.

When you're shopping for a chandelier, you should check the specifications on the product at the shop, such as the weight. You can ask your electrician if you should install a junction box or not.

Chandelier price

Chandeliers come in a variety of price ranges. The regular price of a chandelier is typically between $200 to $400. Designer chandeliers obviously cost more and can exceed the $400 price. 7Pandas offer the best prices for light pendants and fixtures. You can also buy the chandelier at a special price during holiday seasons and sales.

When and how to clean a chandelier

Once you have purchased your chandelier at a good price, you can have it installed by your electrician. Now that you have installed your chandelier, it is very important that you maintain it so that it doesn't lose its shine and beauty. A typical chandelier must be cleaned once or twice a year. Be it a designer chandelier or a local one, crystals become dull over time and have to be cleaned to remain clear and shiny. Other chandeliers should be cleaned when the frame and bulbs get dusty.

Plan before you clean

The majority of the chandeliers have a very complex hanging pattern which is why you should take a picture of the design or know the design before you begin cleaning. Make a diagram or take pictures of the chandelier, so you know where each part goes and belongs to.

Another easier method is to divide the chandelier and clean small sections at a time so that you do not mix the pieces. If your chandelier is too high up or has a very complex design, then you can consider contacting a professional cleaning service to get the job done. Professional cleaners have the experience one needs to deal with such delicate structures.

Materials you will need

The materials needed to clean modern chandeliers are easily available. Firstly you will need a ladder to reach the chandelier along with pads and a drop cloth. Pads prevent glass and crystals from breaking just in case you drop one of them. Padding will also help you protect other furniture and tabletops underneath the chandelier. You will need white and soft gloves made from lint free cloth to clean the crystals.

Cut off the electricity supply

It's not easy cleaning a chandelier. You have to be very cautious about your safety. In order to prevent any hazards, turn off the power supply to the chandelier from the socket on the wall. You should place a piece of tape over the socket switch in order to prevent the chandelier from turning on while you are cleaning it. To completely rest assured, you can also turn off the power supply from the main breaker box. You should turn on an alternative light, so you have enough light to work with.

Cleaning methods

Glass on

The glass on method is one in which the crystals or glass pieces stay on the chandelier, and you thoroughly clean it. This is a much faster process as it saves the time of taking off the glass and putting it back on. In order to clean the chandelier with the glass and crystals still on, use a cleaning solution made up of one part isopropyl alcohol and four parts distilled water mixed in a spray bottle.

Spray the solution onto the white cotton glove and wipe the glass and crystals with the lint free cloth. Immediately dry, then with a dry cloth afterwards. You should do this very slowly and carefully so that the crystals and glass do not break. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners, as ammonia can damage the silver or gold finishing of the metal hooks that make up the chandelier.

Glass off

In the glass off method, you take off all the pieces of glass and crystal and clean each piece individually. This provides better cleaning and is a complete procedure. You can reach every corner, nook and cranny. However, this procedure is very time-consuming. The glass off method allows you greater access to the chandelier.

Use the same solution as mentioned above to clean the chandelier. If your chandelier is very dirty and has grime build-up on it, you can carefully hand wash the glass pieces with lukewarm water and dish wash soap. Apply the dish wash liquid to the glass pieces, rinse immediately, and then dry with a clean cloth. To keep your chandelier clean between cleanups, dust your chandelier with a feather duster every two months.

Things you should remember

No matter which cleaning procedure you use, you should never rotate or twist your chandelier. While cleaning, move your ladder around the chandelier instead of twisting the chandelier towards yourself. By twisting the chandelier, you can loosen its support and cause the chandelier to fall. If the chandelier is difficult to clean, it's a good practice to change all the bulbs when u are cleaning it. However, remember to not exceed the recommended wattage. Also, check if all the bulbs are working before putting your ladder away.

Chandelier Vs pendant light

The majority of the people confuse chandeliers with pendant lights. When in reality, they are poles apart. The chandelier is a light suspended from the ceiling that has many light bulbs attached to a single fixture. At the same time, a pendant light is a light fixture that is suspended from the ceiling and has only one light bulb attached to its fixture.

Major differences between a pendant light and a chandelier

Let us look at some main differences between the two types of light fixtures to get a better understanding.

Price of chandeliers vs pendant lights

Without a doubt, chandeliers are more expensive than pendant lights. You can buy an average pendant light at a price of $10 to $7250. However, according to studies, people usually buy pendant lights at a regular price of $130 and are willing to spend up to $350 on them.

On the other hand, chandelier prices start from $39 and can go up to $15000. A modern and designer chandelier might even cost greater than $15000. Some chandeliers are also used for industrial buildings and need to be huge to offer a showy look.

Suspension

One of the greatest differences between a chandelier and a pendant light is how it is suspended. A chandelier is hung from a chain to support the lights.

The typical look of upright light bulbs is modelled after old and mid century modern chandeliers where candles used to be placed on metal moulds which have been replaced by bulbs. But if you look at a pendant light, you will see that it is suspended from a simple cord that has one hanging light at its end.

Another key difference is that installing a pendant light is way easier and simple than installing a chandelier. In order to install a chandelier, it is recommended that you seek the help of a professional.

Style variation

Pendant lights are simpler, but that does not mean that they can’t be attractive or stylish. As you go higher up on the price chart, you can find artistic pendant lights. Chandeliers come in many different styles and materials. Chandeliers are more of a showpiece than a functional source of light.

Materials used

Chandeliers are made up of glass, steel, bronze, crystal and wrought iron. These materials are quite heavy, which is why chandeliers are suspended by chains. Pendant lights, on the other hand, are made from materials such as brushed steel, stained glass, bronze, Tiffany glass, nickel, lampshades, and blown glass.

Versatility

Chandeliers and pendant lights offer different levels of versatility. Chandeliers are used in living rooms and dining rooms as a source of ambient light, which might not illuminate the corners of a room. Chandeliers are usually large, which is why their use is limited to rooms where they can serve as a showpiece.

As for pendant lights, they are more widely and commonly used as they are smaller. They are a source of light and can be hung anywhere.

When should you get a chandelier vs pendant light?

If you want to brighten a large room such as your dining room or living room, then a chandelier is what you need. If you want to make a bold statement, then a modern chandelier is your solution. But if you want to add more lighting to your dinner table or a kitchen table, then a pendant light is an attractive and decent option.

If you want to add light to outdoor spaces, purchasing weather resistant pendant lights is the perfect solution. Your local electrician can help you determine whether you should buy a pendant light or a chandelier according to your needs.
